JOB: Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Focussed Ion Beam (FIB)/Electron Microscopy, Cambridge31/1/2014 Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) position within the mineral magnetism group of the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge. The position is funded by the ERC grant “Nanopaleomagnetism: a new multiscale approach to paleomagnetic analysis of geological materials”, a brief description of which is given below. Funding is available for 3 years in the first instance. Successful applicants will hold a PhD on taking up the post. The PDRA project will focus on the application of a dual-beam focussed ion beam (FIB) workstation to perform 3D slice-and-view tomography of natural samples. The person appointed will use facilities located in the Department of Materials Science to study the positions, sizes, shapes, compositions and crystallographic orientations of magnetic particles embedded in silicate hosts using a combination of slice-and-view tomography, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). We seek candidates with a strong background in electron microscopy and specific experience with using FIB techniques. Experience with EDX, EBSD and tomography would be an advantage. It is not necessary to have a background in either Earth sciences or magnetism, and we invite suitably experienced candidates from any area of the physical sciences. The successful candidate will have a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals, will have good communication skills and have demonstrated the capacity to perform independent research. For full details see http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/1523/ Interested candidates should contact Dr. Richard Harrison ([email protected]) for more information about the project and formal application procedures. General description of the ERC project: Adopting cutting-edge techniques from physics and materials science, Nanopaleomagnetism aims to perform paleomagnetic measurements at submicron length scales, enabling primary magnetic signals to be extracted from ancient and severely altered geological materials. 3D measurements of the volume, shape and spacing of all magnetic particles within a microscale region of interest will be made using a ‘dual beam’ focussed ion beam workstation. Combined with high-resolution paleomagnetic measurements and nanometre/nanosecond electron/X-ray magnetic imaging, nanopaleomagnetism will, for the very first time, be able to characterise the magnetic properties of geological materials at fundamental length scales and time scales. The nanoscale measurements will enable us to capture the essential physics of the remanence acquisition process and to explore magnetic behaviour ‘in silico’, allowing predictions to be made that can be tested directly against experimental observations at all length scales. Sample-return missions to asteroids, comets, moons and planets will soon provide unprecedented opportunities for extraterrestrial paleomagnetism. Nanopaleomagnetism will provide the methodology and instrumentation needed to analyse these precious materials. The successful candidate will offer courses in Environmental Geology, upper level Mineralogy, and Environmental Studies as well as labs/field trips for each course. This fulfills the standard annual teaching load of five courses. We seek candidates whose areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to, carbon sequestration, acid min drainage, mineral resources, urban geochemistry, or environmental geophysics. Effective August 2014. Ph.D. required at time of appointment. All applications must include the following materials; letter of application as well as separate statements addressing the candidate's teaching interests and scholarly agenda; curriculum vitae; three letters of reference; graduate transcripts; and teaching evaluations or other evidence of demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate instruction. The application should address the candidate's interest in working at a liberal arts college with undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction. In addition, because Whitman College is committed to cultivating a diverse learning community, the applicant should explain how his or her pedagogy will serve to create and sustain an inclusive learning environment. To apply, go tohttps://whitmanhr.simplehire.com/ , click "Faculty" and "Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology". Questions may be directed to Dr. Kirsten Nicolaysen, chair of the search committee, (509) 527-4934, [email protected]. Review of applications will begin on March 3, 2014 and continue until the position is filled. No applicant shall be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, gender, religion, age, marital status, national origin, disability, veteran's status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis prohibited by applicable federal, state, or local law. For additional information about Whitman College and the Walla Walla area, see www.whitman.edu and www.wallawalla.org. We are looking for a motivated researcher to work on projects in reservoir geomechanics focusing on fracture characterization in surface outcrops and wells, rock mechanical testing and/or numerical modeling of tectonic stresses. As employment will be for three years with a possible prolongation for another three years, it is expected that the successful candidate will also develop own externally funded research projects. Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in geology or geophysics. A strong background in structural geology, rock mechanics, seismic interpretation and/or numerical modeling is required. Good communication and computing skills (ideally Ansys® und Petrel®) are essential. It is expected that the successful candidate contributes to teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses. PhD in Helsinki – Doctoral student (3 years funding) What controls strain partitioning at obliquely convergent ocean-continent margins? 3D dynamics of crustal deformation along the western Andean margin This project includes funding for a doctoral student and part-time research assistant to study the fundamental tectonic process of strain partitioning at obliquely convergent ocean-continent margins. The primary controls on strain partitioning behavior will be determined using fully 3D thermomechanical numerical experiments of oceanic subduction and continental deformation. Experimental geometries will be based on the western margin of the South American Andes, where variable strain partitioning occurs along the strike of the mountain system, and results will be compared to observed fault geometries and displacements, seismic activity and geochronologic data. Understanding strain partitioning processes is important, not only for advancing our understanding of plate tectonics, but also because subduction plate margins have potential for deadly, destructive megathrust earthquakes. Thus, deeper knowledge of strain partitioning processes may contribute to future assessment of seismic risk in these regions. The doctoral student will have a chance to work with modern research tools in an exciting geologic region, participate in international research meetings, visit an internationally renowned research group in Canada and co-supervise a research assistant. The formal application period for this project will open in early 2014. For now, interested students should send a copy of their C.V. and the contact information for two references to Prof. Whipp as soon as possible. Students must have completed a master’s degree in either geology, geophysics, physics or a related field prior to being accepted as a doctoral student at the University of Helsinki. Postdoctoral researcher in Helsinki What controls deformation in a ‘bent’ 3D orogen? The effects of spatially variable rock strength, erosion and mass transport on the tectonics of the Bolivian Andes Uplift of large convergent mountain systems like the Himalaya and Andes primarily results from tectonic plate convergence, but their topography and geometry is the result of the interactions between tectonics and climate-modulated erosion. Understanding the interactions between climate and the basic geodynamic processes that control orogen geometry is important because these regions have major seismic risks and significant water resources, but also because they serve as modern analogs to deeply eroded ancient orogens, such as the Svecofennian orogen in Finland, with more limited geologic evidence of orogenic processes. Along the eastern margin of the Bolivian orocline region in Andes, the orientation of the mountain front and major tectonic structures rotates ~50° from northern Bolivia to southern Bolivia and the width of the orogen east of the plateau doubles. These changes are coincident with a large decrease in regional precipitation and an increase in the thickness of weak rock layers that underlie the actively deforming Subandean fold-and- thrust belt, suggesting they may control the mountain belt width. Furthermore, this region is thought to experience orogen-parallel mass transport away from the orocline core as a result of 3D oblique convergence within the orocline, which may also affect orogen width. This project addresses the question what controls the width of a 3D orocline with along-strike variations in climate and rock strength? In a significant advance from previous 2D or simplified 3D modeling studies, fully 3D numerical geodynamic models of generic oroclines will be used to determine the influence of climate-modulated erosion, variable rock strength and 3D deformation on the along-strike width of an orogen. Results will be integrated with available field observations, remote sensing data and 3D tectonic reconstructions, and applied to interpret the recent history of the Bolivian orocline region of the Andes. The postdoctoral researcher trained in this project will conduct the numerical experiments and travel to actively collaborate with project partners at the University of Pittsburgh, USA and University of Bergen, Norway.
